Notes

SNOMED CT (SNOMED Clinical Terms) is a clinical terminology maintained by SNOMED International and released in international and national editions. Its logical model has three component types. A concept is a clinical meaning with a numeric identifier. A description is a human-readable term attached to a concept, with one fully specified name and one or more synonyms per language. A relationship connects two concepts with a typed, directed link, of which the most important is the subtype relationship that forms the hierarchy. Concepts are defined in a description logic, so the hierarchy can be computed by a reasoner rather than placed by hand.

For a physician SNOMED CT is the terminology behind problem lists and procedure coding in many electronic records. For an informatician it is a large, governed, formally defined Code system that a Terminology server can expose. For a radiochemist its coverage of radiopharmaceutical identity, chemical form, and targeting mechanism is a question to be examined rather than assumed.

The scope note states the NucLex position: the project proposes to anchor nuclear medicine content in SNOMED CT where suitable concepts exist, to identify where they do not, and to avoid creating parallel concepts for things SNOMED CT already defines. No NucLex entry claims a SNOMED CT identifier. The SNOMED International logical model page is the authoritative description of the components named above.
